Conservatory of Flowers Project Milestones

1995

Conservatory closes due to severe windstorm damage in early December.

1998

The World Monuments Fund places the Conservatory on the list of the 100 most endangered world monuments.

1998

The National Trust's Save America's Treasures and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton adopt the Conservatory.

1999

Friends of Recreation & Parks' Board of Trustees votes to lead a multimillion-dollar fundraising effort to restore the Conservatory.

1999

The San Francisco Garden Club donates funds to build a temporary greenhouse behind the Conservatory.

1999

Phase I restoration work on the Conservatory begins.

2001

Phase I is completed and Phase II begins in the West Wing.

2002

Phase II is completed and Phase III begins in the East Wing and Dome.

2002

Finial is craned from the upper dome on March 2, and dome dismantling begins.

2003

Restored upper dome craned onto lower dome on January 10.

2003

Phase III is completed.
