Vocabulary Adaptation-a process that makes living things better suited to their environment. Bromeliad-A tropical plant family that includes some plants that grow as epiphytes. Some of the epiphytes produce leaves growing in a tight, water-holding cup shape. The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. Carnivorous plant-A plant that eats insects or small animals to get nutrients. Climate-The average temperature and rainfall of an area over many years. Drip tip-The pointed end of the leaf that allows rainwater to gently runoff. Ecosystem-- The physical environment together with a community of a plants, animals and microscopic organisms. Elevation-The height of a place above sea level. Epiphytes-Plants, such as orchids and bromeliads, that grow on other plants. They usually do not harm the host plant. Equator-An imaginary line around the center of the earth that divides it into the Northern and Southern Hemishperes. Humidity-The amount of water vapor in the air. Hygrometer-An instrument for measuring humidity. Photosynthesis-The process in which plants combine energy from sunlight with water and carbon dioxide in the air to produce food.
