Tropical Climates

Introduction

Rainfall, temperature and humidity are some of the non-living elements that define an ecosystem. On the Adaptation: Plant Survivors! tour, students will define the non-living elements of three distinct environments-Lowland Tropics, Highland Tropics and Aquatic.

Working with a digital thermometer and hygrometer (humidity reader) kids will measure the temperature and humidity of each gallery they visit. They'll discuss the rainfall of each of these environments as well.

After establishing the non-living elements that define these ecosystems, the students will explore the adaptations that allow plants to get their needs met.

Procedure

To prepare students for this experience, we suggest a climate research activity exploring the average temperature, humidity and rainfall of San Francisco in comparison with cities in the tropics.

Students can pick a country, locate its largest city and research its climate. They can locate cities with a population similar to ours, approximately 750,000, and research those.
